Joe Huber pitched a complete game four-hitter to lead Rockhurst to a 7-1 victory over the Maryville Saints in the second game of a doubleheader Friday in St. Louis. Maryville won the first game, 11-6.
Â
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead when they were able to scratch one run across the board in the second. Senior
Calin McCourt reached base on a fielder's choice and then advance to second on a throwing error when Maryville tried to roll two. Redshirt senior
Jake Jones then advance McCourt to third on a deep fly out down the right field line. With two outs, sophomore designated hitter
Seth Soto came up to the plate and hit a ball to the 3-4 hole. The first baseman Mike Wilkinson made a diving stop and tossed it to first base but Soto beat the throw, plating McCourt.
Â
Rockhurst broke the game open with three runs in the third inning behind back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from senior
Caleb Baker, senior
Calin McCourt and redshirt senior
Jake Jones.
Â
The Hawks continued to add to their lead scoring one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth. Freshman
Jeremy Lufft drove a line drive through the right side of the infield to score redshirt junior Blake Peterson.Â
Â
After a Maryville pitching change to begin the fifth inning, Jones reached base on an infield single to the shortstop in the hole. Jones, who has been battling a pulled hamstring since the Wisconsin-Parkside series, looks to be back a full strength. Soto blasted a ball to right center for a stand-up double. With a good read from Jones, he was able to score from first base.
Â
The Saints only threat came in fifth inning, as they were able to score one run on a hit by pitch, walk and then sacrifice fly. Huber was able to bear down and get out of the inning with a run 90 feet away from scoring.
Â
Huber finished with 7.0 innings pitched, one run that was not earned because of a passed ball on four hits, three walks and five strikeouts. He now moves to a 5-2 record.
Â
Lufft, Jones and Soto paced the hitting attack for the Hawks as each finished with two hits. Soto finished 2-3 with one run scored and two RBI.
Â
In the first game, Rockhurst jumped out to an early 1-0 an RBI groundout by redshirt senior
Matt Stacks in the top of the first inning. However, it was Maryville put up crooked numbers scoring in the first four innings. The Saints scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third and five in the fifth to make the game 10-1.Â
Â
The Hawks were able to put up a three spot in the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits. Rockhurst loaded the bases after singles by senior
Patrick Burns and McCourt followed by a hit-by-pitch for sophomore
David Stober. Three-hole hitter, sophomore
Brett Marr stepped to the plate and hit a laser to right-center field for a two-run double.
Â
The Saints were then able to add one insurance run in the bottom of the inning.
Â
Rockhurst tried to mount a comeback in the ninth inning when Marr walked and Stacks drove a ball over the right-center field fence, making the score 11-6. However it was too little, too late.Â
Â
Stacks led the Hawks with four RBI, going 1-4. He had two team at-bats where he got a run in.  Marr and Burns each collected two hits.
Michael Lydon-Lorson (5-2) allowed eight runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings.
