Missouri Southern Lions invade Mason-Halpin

Starting guard Josh Roberts
The Rockhurst Hawks (2-1) host the Missouri Southern Lions (3-1) of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association tonight at 6 p.m. The Lions lead the all-time series, 25-19. Rockhurst holds a 12-9 edge in Kansas City, while Southern has 16-7 advantage in Joplin. The series started in 1969-70 and was played regularly until their last meeting in 2006-07.

The Lions are coming off an 80-73 victory at William Jewell on Saturday. Senior guard Taevaunn Prince led Southern with 29 points and 17 rebounds. Prince ranks 29th in points per game (25.5) and 15th in rebounds per game (13.0) among NCAA Division II players. Former Kansas Jayhawk guard Jeff Boschee is in his second year as the head coach of the Lions.

"Southern has a real nice ball club. They have some impressive offensive weapons," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "They shoot it real well and have guys who can get in the paint. Defending them will be a challenge. Taevaunn Prince is putting up incredible numbers, so dealing with him will be important. It is a quick turnaround from Washburn, so our mental prep has to be great.

Rockhurst jumped out to a 14-point halftime lead in rolling to a 75-51 victory over Washburn Saturday in Topeka, Kan. Rockhurst shot 50 percent and held to the Ichabods to 25.8 percent shooting in the first half. The Hawks outscored Washburn, 38-28, in the second half. Austin LeVan led the Hawks with 21 points and five rebounds. Malachi Nix posted 18 points behind four 3-point field goals. Alex Hagan collected 12 points and 11 rebounds his first college start.

Freshman guard Austin LeVan leads the Hawks with a 17.3 scoring average while shooting 50 percent from the field and 91.7 at the foul line. Junior guard Malachi Nix is averaging 12.3 points, 5.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game. Senior center Dominique Washington (10.5) and sophomore forward Alex Hagan (10.0) also are scoring in double figures.
