The 1964 Rockhurst Hawks returned to the site of their NAIA national basketball championship Monday night at Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium. Twelve members of the Hawks were presented their original championship trophy 50 years later at halftime of the NAIA Tournament's first semifinal game.
NAIA president Jim Carr presented to the trophy to Pat Caldwell, who is Rockhurst's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Caldwell was one of 11 former players, along with their student manager, to return for the 50-year reunion of their championship team. The Hawks upset Texas-Pan American, 66-56, to capture the 1964 NAIA national championship before a record crowd of more than 10,000 fans at KC's Municipal Auditorium.
Caldwell was joined at midcourt Monday night by former student manager Chuck Plague and his former teammates: Dick Hennier, Joel Frisch, Ralph Telken, Jim Selzer, Al Payne, Harry Witte, Dennis Rabbitt, Tom Fisher, Chuck Dunlap and Rich Grawer. Telken and Selzer were the co-captains of the team. Walt Tylicki, who passed away in 2006, is the only deceased member of the team.
The halftime ceremony culminated a two-day celebration of Rockhurst men's basketball. A luncheon banquet was held on Sunday at RU's Convocation Center and on Monday morning a poster honoring Rockhurst's championship team was unveiled at the College Basketball Experience in downtown Kansas City.
