Hawks drop nailbiter at Lewis, 73-69

Box Score The 22nd-ranked Lewis Flyers connected on 10-of-12 free throws in the final 1:08 to pull out a 73-69 victory over Rockhurst Thursday night in Romeoville, Ill.

The Flyers outscored Rockhurst 8-3 over the final 46 seconds as the Hawks missed two shots and turned the ball over once. A game-tying layup by the Hawks' Nardie Bogues was blocked with two seconds left.

Rockhurst took the lead twice in the final 95 seconds. Andrew Ellwanger's three-pointer gave the Hawks a 64-63 lead with 1:35 remaining. Two free throws by James Robinson put Rockhurst in front 66-65 with 58 seconds left.

Robinson led the Hawks with 14 points. Ellwanger hit three three-pointers and finished with 11 points. Russell Burns posted 10 points and nine rebounds. B.J. Dunbar added nine points, four rebounds and three assists. Brandon McCann, who leads the Hawks with a 17.3 scoring average, did not play due to an injury.

The Hawks shot 40.3 percent (25 of 62) from the field, while hitting eight-of-21 three-pointers. Lewis shot 44.2 percent from the field (23 of 52) and 78.1 at the foul line (25 of 32). The Flyers also won the rebound battle, 34-33.

Rockhurst, 5-14 and 1-11 in the GLVC, next plays at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday at 3 p.m.
