Russell Burns scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead Rockhurst to a 79-77 victory over William Jewell Thursday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.
After the Hawks took four-point lead on a layup by Burns with 24 seconds left, Rockhurst held on for the win when Jewell's Alexander Hutson missed a three-pointer in the final seconds.
Burns capped an 11-0 run with a jumper at the 10:50 mark of the second half to give the Hawks a 56-51 lead. Burns drained another jumper to put Rockhurst in front 70-65 with 3:38 left.
Senior guard
James Robinson drained a three-pointer with 2:05 left to widen the Hawks' lead to 75-67. Jewell sank a pair of three-pointers to cut move within two points with 40 seconds left.
Brandon McCann and Robinson both scored 12 points in their final games at Rockhurst. McCann and Robinson also combined for 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Burns grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Andrew Ellwanger finished with 10 points while hitting two three-pointers.
The Hawks (7-18) shot 42.4 percent (28 of 66) from the field and connected on six-of-20 3-point field goals. Jewell made 29 of 76 field goals (38.2 percent) and seven-of-25 3-pointers.
