Box Score William Jewell dominated the boards on the way to an 85-79 victory over Rockhurst in a Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Thursday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House. The Cardinals outrebounded the Hawks 47-28 while scoring 22 second-chance points.
A 9-0 run midway through the second half gave Jewell a 65-50 lead and never let Rockhurst get closer than five points in the final 10 minutes. The Cardinals shot 56.7 percent in the first half to take a 44-39 halftime lead.
Josh Roberts led the Hawks with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Dominique Washington finished with 17 points on eight-of-14 shooting.
Russell Burns posted nine points, six rebounds and two steals.
Andrew Ellwanger added eight points and four rebounds.
Joshua Brannon had a team-high seven assists.
The Hawks shot 46.8 percent from the field (29 of 62) and sank 10-of-26 3-point field goals (38.5 percent). Jewell shot 46.2 percent from the field (30 of 65) and 33.3 percent from beyond the 3-point line (7 of 21).
Rockhurst (3-3, 0-1 GLVC) will play at Emporia State on Saturday night.
