Box Score Missouri Western dominated points in the paint in pulling away for a 66-60 victory over Rockhurst Friday night at the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic in St. Joseph, Mo.
The Griffons outscored Rockhurst 36-18 inside the lane while hitting 18-of-41 shots from inside the three-point line. Missouri Western also outrebounded the Hawks, 42-36.
Rockhurst took its last lead at 48-47 on a layup by Adam Fatkin with 6:43 left in the game. Missouri Western went on a 13-2 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to take a 60-50 lead. The Hawks pulled within four points in the last minute on a 3-point basket by Russell Burns.
Burns led the Hawks with 18 points and nine rebounds. John Burke came off the bench to score 11 points. Joshua Brannon posted 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Hawks shot 34.0 percent from the field (18-of-53) and 67.9 percent from the foul line (19-of-28).
Rockhurst (1-1) will play Northwest Missouri State Saturday night on the second day of the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic.
