Hawks leave William Jewell with a split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Sophomore right-hander Thomas Woodard collected his fifth win of the season to carry Rockhurst to a 5-1 victory over William Jewell in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals gained a split by winning the second game, 6-1.

Woodard held Jewell to four hits and one unearned run over six-plus innings. Josh Samuelson relieved Woodard to get the last out of the game with the bases loaded to earn his seventh save of the season.

Rockhurst scored three runs in the second inning. Caleb Baker drove in the first with a groundout to short. Josh Baker and Anthony Davis added RBI singles in the second. Josh Dennett hit a sacrifice fly in the third and Josh Baker drove in his second run with a single. Josh Baker and Tyler Gans had two hits apiece.

In the second game, Jewell scored three runs in the first and added two more tallies in the sixth. Matthew Stacks and Josh Dennett both posted two hits for the Hawks. Zach Loeffelholz suffered his fifth loss of the season.

The Hawks (16-16, 11-13 GLVC) host a four-game series against Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday and Sunday.
