Rockhurst picks up sweep at home over USI Eagles

Thomas Woodard threw a five-hit shutout on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Sophomore right-hander Thomas Woodard blanked Southern Indiana on five hits to carry Rockhurst to a 1-0 victory in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at RU's Loyola Park. The Hawks completed the sweep with a 5-4 victory in the second game.

Caleb Baker singled home Tyler Gans with two outs in the fifth for the game-winning hit in the opener. Baker and Josh Dennett led the Hawks with two hits apiece. Woodard struck out nine and walked three to improve his record to 2-0 on the season.

In the second game, the Hawks pushed across the winning run in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Gans. Rockhurst scored three runs in the second to take a 4-3 lead. Anthony Davis, Brandon Tangney and Patrick Chandler collected run-scoring singles. Alex Seier (3-0) came out of the bullpen to get the win with five-plus innings of work/. Josh Samuelson pitched the ninth inning to post his four save of the season.

The Hawks (6-5, 2-2 GLVC) play a single game at Washburn (4 p.m.) on Wednesday before returning to conference play on Saturday at Bellarmine.
