Rockhurst collects 53-52 road win at Maryville

Rockhurst held on down the stretch to edge Maryville 53-52 Thursday night in St. Louis, Mo. A three-point shot by the Saints rimmed out in the final seconds and their rebound basket came after the final buzzer.

The Hawks scored their final points of the game on a jumper by James Robinson with 3:02 left, putting Rockhurst in front 53-47. The Hawks turned the ball over twice and missed a shot in the final three minutes, while Maryville scored five points on two-of-four shooting.

Rockhurst jumped out to a 29-13 lead in the first half on a jumper by Cooper Beckett and led 34-24 at halftime. Brandon McCann and Liam Duffy combined for five three-point field goals in the first half.

McCann led the Hawks with 12 points and nine rebounds. Beckett finished with 12 points and five rebounds before fouling out with 51 seconds left to play. Freshman David Wingerson scored eight points. Duffy added six points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals.

The Hawks shot 37.7 percent from the field  on 20-of-53 shooting. Maryville made 16-of-49 field goals (32.7 percent). The Hawks won the rebound battle, 35-34.

The win moves Rockhurst to 4-17 overall and  3-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks play at Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
