Rockhurst collects overtime win at Springfield

For the second time in three days, Rockhurst won a close conference game on the road. The Hawks pulled out a 76-71 victory in overtime at Illinois Springfield on Saturday.

Brandon McCann, who led the Hawks with 21 points, scored the go-ahead basket with 1:02 left in overtime to give Rockhurst a 70-68 lead. The Hawks then made all six of their free throws in the final 30 seconds.

Rockhurst rallied from a 64-55 deficit in the final three minutes to force overtime. McCann, Logan Souder and Liam Duffy drained 3-point shots in the 11-2 run down the stretch. Duffy's 3-pointer tied the score at 66-all with 48 seconds left. The Hawks, who trailed 37-24 at halftime, never led in the second half.

Duffy posted 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. James Robinson, who made four free throws in the final minute of overtime, finished with 12 points and seven assists. Freshman David Wingerson collected 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Cooper Beckett added nine points and three rebounds.

The Hawks and Prairie Stars both shot 44.3 percent from the field  on 27-of-61 shooting. Rockhurst hit 11-of-26 3-point field goals (42.3 percent), while Springfield made six-of-21 3-pointers (28.6 percent). The Prairie Stars won the rebound battle, 42-32.

The win moves Rockhurst to 3-13 overall and  2-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks return home to host Missouri S&T Thursday night.
