Baseball opens Florida trip with 8-2 win

Rockhurst split its first two games against the University of Jamestown in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Saturday in Davenport, Florida.

The Hawks won their season-opening eighth win a row with an 8-2 win over Jamestown. The Jimmies came back to win the second game, 11-0.

Game 1: RU 8, Jamestown 2

Rockhurst used a seven-run sixth inning to post their first victory of the season away from Bourke Field.

Michael Laudando drove in two runs with a single in the sixth. Gustavo Leon, Michael Novak and Josh Syfert added run-scoring singles. Afton Koch had an RBI single in the fifth.

Jacob Merithew (1-0) held Jamestown to two runs on five hits while striking out five in 7.0 innings.

Game 2: Jamestown 11, RU 0

The Jimmies scored six runs on five hits in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead. Jamestown added two-run innings in the fourth and sixth.

Rockhurst was held to six base runners on three hits, two hit batsmen and one walk by Jimmies' starter Isaac Hanson. The Hawks didn't get their first hit until there were two outs in the fourth.

The Hawks (8-1) play Roosevelt on Sunday at 4:30 pm Florida time.
