Hawks drop season opener at Vanguard

The Rockhurst men's volleyball team fell in four sets to Vanguard in their season opener Thursday night in Costa Mesa, California.

Rockhurst won the first set, 25-22. The Lions took the next three sets, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-22.

Shay Spadaro tallied a team-leading nine kills and eight digs. Will Sutphen tallied eight kills. Nathan Jacques led the Hawks with 26 assists.

Lucas Tran recorded seven kills and five digs. Sutphen, Wesley Yusk, Aron DeRoy and Jacques each tied for a team-high two blocks.

Rockhurst had 31 kills, 31 assists, 26 digs, six service aces, and five team blocks. The Hawks finished with a .240 hitting percentage.

Rockhurst (0-1) faces Concordia Irvine on Friday at 7 p.m. in Irvine, California.
