Hawks hold off late run by SBU to post 87-78 victory

Drenin Dinkins and Jaylen Wesley combined for 50 points to lead Rockhurst to an 87-78 victory over Southwest Baptist on Sunday at Mason-Halpin Field House.

Dinkins led the Hawks with 26 points. He made four-of-nine 3-pointers and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the foul line. He also had a team-high eight rebounds and three assists.

Wesley finished with 24 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. He connected on five field goals and 12-of-13 free throws.

The Hawks built a 16-point lead, 67-51, with 10:59 left to play. The Bearcats went on a 15-4 run to cut RU's lead to five, 71-66, with 5:37 left. Wesley and Dinkins led an 8-2 run to put the Hawks up 79-68 with 2:42 left.

Two of Micah Deaver's career-high 13 points came on a layup at the first-half buzzer that pushed Rockhurst's lead to 45-37 at halftime. Dinkins (16), Deaver (11) and Wesley (10) combined for 37 of the Hawks' 45 first-half points.

Peyton Newbern tallied eight points and three steals. Jack Scott posted seven points and three rebounds. Jaden Flournoy added six points, five rebounds and three assists.

Rockhurst shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field and 30.3 percent (10-of-33) from three. The Hawks also collected nine steals.
