Hawks open IVA Tournament with 3-1 victory

Rockhurst posted a 3-1 victory over Catawba in the opening round of the IVA Men's Volleyball Tournament on Friday at Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri. The Hawks have now won seven in a row and are winners of 12 out of their last 13.

Fourth-seeded Rockhurst (19-10) will face top-seeded Lincoln Memorial (22-1) on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the IVA Tournament semifinals.

Catawba won the first set, 25-20. The Hawks used a 7-1 run in the middle of the second set to win 25-23 and won the third set 25-20. 

Rockhurst went on a 5-0 in the fourth set to tie it at 21-all. The Hawks won the fourth set, 28-26, and ended the match after consecutive kills by Beau Cecil and Aron DeRoy.

Lucas Tran recorded a team-high 17 kills. Shay Spadaro had 15 kills and led the Hawks with three service aces and 13 digs. 

Cecil collected 13 kills, two service aces and 11 digs. Tyler Zippay had a team-high 37 assists and a service ace. 

DeRoy and Daniel Mekonen each led Rockhurst with two blocks each. Nathan Jacques had 17 assists and a block. Jackson Daugherty tallied 11 digs.

Rockhurst finished with 63 kills, six service aces, five blocks, 56 assists and 54 digs.
