Hawks defeat Maryville in five sets

A block by Max Tkachev, Shay Spadaro and Daniel Mekonen sealed a five-set victory for Rockhurst over Maryville in St. Louis, Missouri on Friday.

Maryville won the first set 25-23. The Hawks and Saints played a back-and-forth second set that saw no team take a lead of more than three for the first 38 combined points.
 
Rockhurst went on to take a 24-21 lead before Maryville tied the set at 24-24. The Hawks scored the final two points of the set to win 26-24 with a Spadaro ace.

The Saints won the third set, 25-19, to take a 2-1 lead.

Rockhurst took a 9-6 lead in the fourth set before a 9-2 Maryville run to go up 15-11. The Hawks responded with a 5-2 run of their own to pull within one at 17-16 and 22-21. Then, the Hawks scored the final four points to win the set 25-22 and force a deciding fifth set.

Maryville took a 9-5 lead in the fifth set before a 4-1 Hawks run pulled Rockhurst within one at 10-9. The set had ties shortly after at 11-11, 12-12 and 14-14 before Rockhurst finished the match by winning the final two points.

Lucas Tran led Rockhurst in kills with 19 and added two service aces. Mekonen had a team-leading eight blocks. Nathan Jacques had 32 assists while Tyler Zippay recorded 14. Jackson Daugherty led the Hawks with 11 digs, as Tkachev added 10.

Spadaro finished with 15 kills, a service ace, six blocks, two assists and six digs. 

The Hawks finished with 51 kills, three service aces, 16 blocks, 51 assists and 42 digs.
