The Rockhurst men's volleyball team fell short by a 3-2 score to 20th-ranked McKendree on Saturday night in Lebanon, Illinois.
The Bearcats (1-3) took the first set, 25-22. In the second set, the Hawks tied it at 24-24 after overcoming deficits of 19-15 and 22-17. Rockhurst went on to win 35-33, which was the program's first winning set in school history.
The Hawks won the third set, 25-23, and the Bearcats took the fourth set 25-21 to force a deciding fifth set.
After the Bearcats took a 12-9 lead in the fifth set, the Hawks answered with a quick 3-0 run to tie it at 12. The end of the fifth set saw six ties and seven lead changes before the Bearcats won 20-18.
Two Hawks finished with double-doubles, as Max Tkachev had 19 kills and 16 digs while Lucas Tran had 17 kills and 14 digs.
Shay Spadaro finished with 15 kills, four blocks, two aces and two assists. Nathan Jacques collected 58 assists and two aces. Beau Cecil tallied 15 digs and five assists.
The Hawks had 68 kills, six aces, 15 blocks, 66 assists and 63 digs.
