Rockhurst dropped its opening game in the 2024 Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament, falling to Maryville, 9-3, Thursday at Mtn. Dew Park in Marion, Illinois.
The Hawks (27-23) will now play Drury in the loser's bracket at 9 a.m. Friday. Drury lost to William Jewell, 3-2, in 10 innings on Thursday.
Maryville (35-16) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning. After Rockhurst cut MU's lead to 4-3 in the eighth, the Saints scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Michael Laudando (7-5) allowed eight runs on nine hits over 7.2 innings. Laudando collected three of the Hawks' seven hits.
Patrick Wind hit a two-run home run to right-center in the eighth and doubled in the fourth. Avery Garmon doubled to set up the Hawks' three-run eighth.
