Hawks go unbeaten in Crossover with win over NMU

Rockhurst defeated Northern Michigan 3-1 on Saturday afternoon to go a perfect 3-0 at the Midwest Region Crossover. The Hawks moved their winning streak to five in a row, the longest of the season.

Northern Michigan (13-5) won the first set 25-19. The second set was won by Rockhurst with three timely 4-0 runs.

After being down 8-6 in the second set, Rockhurst used a 4-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. Up 16-13, Rockhurst used a second 4-0 run to extend the lead to 20-13. A third 4-0 run took the Hawks lead from 20-14 to 24-14.

The Hawks went on to win the second set, 25-16, while holding Northern Michigan to an .073 hitting percentage.

The third set featured an 8-0 run and a 7-0 run by the Hawks, allowing them to cruise to victory. Northern Michigan held a 6-4 lead early in the third set. Rockhurst used its 8-0 run to flip the set in its favor to take a 12-6 lead. After the Hawks were up 17-10, their 7-0 run pushed the lead to 24-10. Rockhurst won the third set, 25-11, holding Northern Michigan to a .040 hitting percentage.

After back-and-forth scoring by both teams to begin the fourth set, Northern Michigan took an 11-8 lead. A quick 4-0 run by Rockhurst gave the Hawks a 12-11 lead. Then, a 3-0 run by each team and a 4-0 run by Northern Michigan put the Wildcats up 21-18 over the Hawks.

Rockhurst responded with a 5-0 run to go up 23-21, but a 3-0 run by Northern Michigan put the Wildcats on the brink of forcing a fifth set with a 24-23 lead.

Three ties and three lead changes immediately followed, with the last of the three taking place after Northern Michigan tied the fourth set at 26. Rockhurst finished the set and the match with a Chloe Tyrrell kill and an Ali Olson block to win the set 28-26 and the match, 3-1.

Three Hawks finished in double figures in kills, including Tyrrell (15), Sarah Pyle (11) and Tera Reberry (11). Sarah Montague and Molly Trachta led the Hawks in assists with 20 and 13, respectively. Trachta also had six service aces while Pyle tallied five of her own. 

Two Hawks had 11 or more digs, as Maureen Reilly had 25 and Pyle recorded 11. 

Rockhurst (13-5, 4-2 GLVC) returns to GLVC play next weekend, with both matches at 6 p.m. The Hawks face Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa on Friday, Oct. 25 and will then play Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri on Saturday, Oct. 26.
