Late goal lifts Hawks to 2-1 season-opening win

The Rockhurst men's soccer team kicked off the 2023 season with a 2-1 victory over Central Methodist Thursday night at Bourke Field. Junior midfielder Jacopo Belardo tapped in a cross from the goal line for the game-winning goal with 2:24 left in the game.

Belardo led the Hawks with six shots and four shots on goal. Senior midfielder Luca Zallo came off the bench to assist on Belardo's late goal.

Freshman forward Blake Barrick gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the first half on a six-yard shot on the left side of the box. Senior forward Tomasso Tirabassi was credited with the assist on Barrick's goal.

Senior goalkeeper Fabio D'Errico made six saves for the Hawks. CMU scored in the 68th minute in the second half.

Rockhurst (1-0) will next face Newman on Sunday in Wichita, Kan.
