Hawks pull off 88-81 win over No. 4 UMSL Tritons

Rockhurst nearly led from start to finish in upsetting fourth-ranked Missouri-St. Louis, 88-81, Thursday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks shot 50 percent from the field (21-of-42) and connected on 88.4 percent from the free-throw line (38-of-43) to give Coach Drew Diener his first win over a Top 10 team. Rockhurst's last win over a nationally-ranked team came in 2020 at 25th-ranked Southern Indiana.

Rockhurst led 35-27 at halftime and enjoyed a 19-point lead, 69-50, at the 6:53 mark in the second half. The Hawks held off a late UMSL rally by hitting 19-of-22 free throws in the final 5:05.

Rich Byhre led the Hawks with 27 points and six rebounds. He made five-of-11 field goals and was a perfect 16-of-16 at the foul line. Jake Auer finished with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Timaris Brown tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds. Rron Thaci, Nick Arensberg and Davit Kakushadze combined for 24 points off the bench.

Bowen Sandquist led the Tritons (12-1, 4-1 GLVC) with 18 points.
