Hawks blank Newman, 3-0, in home opener

The Rockhurst men's soccer team broke into the win column for the first time this season, posting a 3-0 victory over the Newman Jets in their home opener Sunday at Bourke Field.

Elluan Martins Gomes helped give the Hawks to a 2-0 halftime lead. The senior forward opened the scoring when he knocked in a rebound shot from 28 yards out that came off the Newman keeper.

Martins Gomes assisted on the second goal when Nick Grewe found the nets from 12 yards out with 2:07 left in the first half.

Tomasso Tirabassi capped the scoring early in the second half on a 16-yard shot in the 50th minute. Nifty passes from freshman Kaden Cripe and Josh Lindell set up the goal.

Rockhurst posted 22 shots and 12 shots on goal. Parker Esparza led RU with four shots. Martins Gomes, Jacob Muckerman and Jacopo Belardo each had two shots on goal.

RU keeper Andrea Dorella stopped six Newman shots, including four in the first half, in collecting his second shutout of the season.

The Hawks (1-0-2) open conference play at William Jewell on Sunday, Sept. 11.
