Outside shooting carries Bearcats past Hawks

McKendree connected on 14 three-pointers, including hitting eight 3s in the second half, to pull away for a 72-63 victory over Rockhurst Saturday night in Lebanon, Illinois.

The Bearcats scored the first 11 points in the second half while hitting three 3-pointers to take a 40-28 lead at the 17:52 mark. Rockhurst rallied to pull within five points at 63-58 with 2:16 left before McKendree closed the game on a 9-5 run.

"This a tough league. You have to play well to win," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We played hard but didn't finish well enough. They put you in a tough spot by putting five guys who make threes out there. Usually you can outrebound those teams, we didn't. That has been out biggest team weakness."

Nick Volz led the Hawks with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. The senior forward connected on nine-of-16 shooting.

Rich Byhre tallied 18 points, four rebounds and two steals. Maxim Romanov added eight points and six rebounds.

Rockhurst hit 24 of 59 shots from the field (40.7 percent ). The Hawks made 46.7 percent of its shots in the second half (14 of 30).

McKendree (11-5, 7-5 GLVC) shot 48.1 percent from the field (25 of 52). Bryson Bultman led the Bearcats with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
