Jewell posts 75-64 win over Hawks

William Jewell broke open a tight game midway through the second half to post a 75-64 victory over Rockhurst Thursday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Cardinals went on an 11-0 run to take a 61-48 lead with 7:28 left to play. Jewell widened its lead to 75-55 before the Hawks ended the game on a 9-0 run.

"We hit a stretch where we didn't score in the second half. I'd like to watch that again to see exactly how that played out. Our turnovers were silly. That hurt us," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener.

Rockhurst hit 26 of 59 shots from the field (44.1 percent ). The Hawks made 12-of-27 field goals in the second half (44.4 percent).

Rich Byhre led the Hawks with 15 points (on six-of-14 shooting) and seven rebounds. Nick Volz posted 12 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots. Jake Auer tallied 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Maxim Romanov collected nine points and seven rebounds. Rron Thaci added nine points on three 3-pointers.

Jewell (13-14, 9-10 GLVC) shot 39.7 percent from the field (25 of 63) and made 16-of-18 free throws (88.9 percent). Mason Alexander led the Cardinals with 22 points.
