Outside shooting lifts Quincy to six-point win

Nick Volz scored a career-high 31 points, but it wasn't enough as Rockhurst fell short at Quincy, 86-80, Thursday night in Quincy, Illinois.

Volz connected on 13-of-16 field goals and finished with eight rebounds. The senior forward scored 17 points in the first half while only missing one shot from the field.

"We were great on the boards (38-27 advantage). That was great to see," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "(Nick) Volz was outstanding inside. We didn't shoot the ball well enough. There was a stretch when we couldn't keep them in front of us. It got us into rotation and opened up the 3's for them."

Quincy made nine-of-15 three-pointers in the second half and at one point led by 13 points, 57-44, with 12:40 left to play. Quincy scored its last 10 points from the free-throw line in the final 2:31.

Rockhurst hit 31 of 66 shots from the field (47.0 percent ). The Hawks made 16-of-33 field goals in the second half (48.5 percent).

Maxim Romanov posted 15 points, five rebounds and three steals. Rich Byhre tallied 15 points and five rebounds.


Quincy (13-14, 6-11 GLVC) shot 50.0 percent from the field (27 of 54). Paul Zilinskas led the home team with 20 points and nine assists.
