Board play carries Flyers past Hawks

Rebounding proved to be the deciding factor as Lewis rallied for a 73-63 victory over Rockhurst Thursday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

Lewis scored 21 second-chance points while winning the rebounding battle, 37-20. The Flyers out-rebounded Rockhurst, 22-11, in the second half.

The Flyers outscored Rockhurst, 21-8, over the final nine minutes. The Hawks missed 10 of their last 14 shots from the field after taking a 55-52 lead on a Rich Byhre 3-pointer at the 8:56 mark.

"We have a rebounding problem. Our size hasn't translated to being better on the glass. It's very frustrating and makes it tough for us to win consistently," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener.

Jake Auer led the Hawks with 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals. The sophomore guard connected on three-of-six 3-point field goals

Maxim Romanov and Byhre also finished with 14 points while combining on 10-of-23 shooting. Nick Volz posted 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Rockhurst hit 23 of 51 shots from the field (45.1 percent ). The Hawks made 14-of-24 field goals in the first half (58.3 percent).

Lewis (11-7, 9-2 GLVC) shot 46.2 percent from the field (24 of 52). Bruno Williams led the Flyers with 21 points.
