Strong start leads Hawks to 79-70 win over Washburn

Jake Auer and Rich Byhre combined for 38 points to lead Rockhurst to a 79-70 victory over Washburn in the Hawks' home opener Friday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks jumped out to a 37-27 halftime lead and opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 16-point lead at the 16:49 mark.

Rockhurst closed the game on a 7-3 run after the Ichabods pulled within five, 72-67, with 1:41 left to play. Auer and Byhre scored 10 of the Hawks' last 13 points.

Auer led the Hawks with 20 points on six-of-14 shooting. The junior guard connected on five of the Hawks' 11 three-point field goals.

Byhre collected his third straight double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. He also posted three blocks.

Freshman Timaris Brown scored 12 points on five-of-seven shooting. Davit Kakushadze finished with 11 points and three assists. Freshman Miles White added eight points and nine rebounds.

Rockhurst shot 45.6 percent from the field (26-of-57) and 78.34 percent from the foul line (18-of-23).
