Rockhurst drops nail-biter at Emporia State, 66-64

Emporia State overcame a six-point deficit in the second half to edge Rockhurst, 66-64, Wednesday night in Emporia, Kansas.

The Hawks grabbed a 42-36 lead on two free throws from Miles White with 14:40 left in the second half. The Hornets went on a 12-2 run to take a 48-44 lead at the 11:22 mark.

Rockhurst missed a game-tying three-pointer with 1:47 left and cut Emporia State's lead to two points on a jumper in the paint by Davit Kakushadze with seven seconds left.

Rich Byhre led the Hawks with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Byhre connected on eight-of-10 field goals. Byhre scored 15 of the Hawks' 31 second-half points.

Kakushadze and Jake Auer both came off the bench to score in double figures. Kakushadze finished with 16 points while going a perfect eight-for-eight on free throws. Auer scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half.

White tallied eight points and four rebounds. Jihad Thornton and Nico Felici combined for six assists and three steals.

Rockhurst shot 41.5 percent from the field (22-of-53) and 88.9 percent from the foul line (16-of-18).
