Rockhurst falls short in season opener

Purdue Northwest held off a late rally by Rockhurst to post an 85-76 victory in the Hawks' season opener in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge Friday night in Hammond, Indiana.

The Pride outscored Rockhurst 13-3 in the final three-plus minutes after the Hawks took a brief one-point lead. Davit Kakushadze capped a 14-4 run on a dunk shot to give Rockhurst a 73-72 lead at the 3:53 mark.

Rich Byhre led the Hawks with 16 points and nine rebounds. Nico Felici scored 13 points on five-of-six shooting. Freshman Miles White finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

Kakushadze posted seven points and eight rebounds. Jihad Thornton, Davit Abuladze and Jake Auer combined for 21 points off the bench.

Rockhurst ended up shooting 42.9 percent from the field (30-of-70) and 90.7 percent from the foul line (11-of-12).
