Hawks bounce back for 2-0 win over McKendree

Jacopo Belardo and Elluan Martins Gomes combined for two goals and seven shots to lead Rockhurst to a 2-0 victory over McKendree Sunday at Bourke Field.

Belardo opened the scoring in the 19th minute when the sophomore midfielder headed in a five-yard shot off a corner kick from freshman Max Banestig.

Martins Gomes capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 90th minute. The senior midfielder stole the ball in the left corner and made a six-yard shot from an extreme angle.

Rockhurst bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Indianapolis on Friday to collect nine of its 12 shots in the second half. Martins Gomes led the Hawks with four shots and three shots on goal. Belardo tallied three shots. Nick Grewe added two shots.

RU keeper Andrea Dorella posted his seventh shutout of the season. He has only allowed four goals in 11 games.

The Hawks (6-2-3, 5-2-1 GLVC) play at Illinois Springfield (4-3-4, 3-1-4) Friday afternoon at 3:30.
