Rockhurst drops exhibition game at Rice

The Rockhurst men's basketball team fell in exhibition play at Rice University, 112-68, Monday night in Houston, Texas.

The Hawks ended the first half on a 22-17 run to cut Rice's lead to 12, 49-37, at halftime. Rockhurst shot 41.2 percent from the field in the first half and made seven-of-14 three-point field goals.

"We had a lot of bright spots in the first half. We felt good going into the locker room," said RU coach Drew Diener. "They really lit it up from (the 3-point line) to start the second half and it got out of hand. We didn't finish as well as we are capable of. Overall, they gave us weaknesses to address."

The Owls shot 61.8 percent from the floor in the second half to finish at 56.7 percent (38-for-67) from the field, including 14-of-34 from three. Max Fielder led six Rice players in double figures with 17 points.

Davit Kakushadze led the Hawks with 12 points on four-of-nine shooting. Jake Auer posted 10 points and two steals. Rron Thaci and Nico Felici scored nine and eight points, respectively. Freshman Miles White had a team-high five rebounds.

The Hawks open their season on Friday, Nov. 11, against Purdue Northwest at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover at 7 p.m. in Hammond, Indiana.
