Second-half run powers Hawks to 73-64 win at home

Jake Auer and Maxim Romanov combined for 35 points and 14 rebounds to lead Rockhurst to a 73-64 victory over Illinois Springfield Monday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks used an 11-0 run in the second half to take a 53-45 lead with 6:28 left in the game. Auer hit a pair of 3-point shots in the run.

Rockhurst closed the game on a 20-14 run. Romanov scored nine of those points in the final 5:14. The Hawks scored their last nine points on free throws.

Auer led the Hawks with 19 points, six rebounds and two steals. The sophomore guard connected on four-of-eight 3-point field goals and five-of-six free throws. Romanov posted 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Nick Volz posted nine points, seven rebounds and four assists. Rich Byhre tallied eight points and two blocks. Jihad Thornton added seven points and four assists. Nick Arensberg and Rron Thaci combined for 12 points off the bench.


"The two things that stood out tonight was our ability to be better on the boards than we have been and then another good game of limiting turnovers. Their changing defenses didn't force too many turnovers, which was nice to see," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener.


Rockhurst hit 24 of 52 shots from the field (46.2 percent ). The Hawks made 13-of-24 field goals in the second half (54.2 percent).

Springfield (9-11, 4-8 GLVC) shot 43.3 percent from the field (26 of 60). Chase Robinson led the Stars with 20 points.
