Free throws lift Hawks to 68-67 win over UMSL

Nick Volz connected on two free throws with 24 seconds left to give Rockhurst a 68-67 victory over Missouri-St. Louis Thursday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

Rockhurst rallied from a 54-42 deficit in the final 8:46 to defeat the Tritons for the second year in a row. The Hawks, led by a 10-0 run, made eight of their last nine shots from the field to end the game on a 26-13 run.

"That was a huge win for us," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We respect the heck out of UMSL and how they play. In order to beat them, you have to play tough and physical. Our guys did that and handled our deficit in the second half with poise and togetherness. We got quality minutes from several guys off the bench, which is always so nice to see."

Rich Byhre led the Hawks with 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Volz finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. The senior forward connected on nine-of-10 free throws.

Rockhurst shot 55.8 percent from the field (24 of 53). The Hawks made 12-of-19 field goals in the second half (63.2 percent).

Nick Arensberg came off the bench to score seven points in the final eight minutes. The sophomore guard gave the Hawks a 66-65 lead with a three-point play with 54 seconds left.
