Hawks suffer road loss at Southwest Baptist

Southwest Baptist pulled away in the final 10 minutes to post an 84-69 victory over Rockhurst on Monday night in Bolivar, Missouri.

Junior guard Mitch Ganote scored a career-high 25 points to lead four Bearcats in double-figure scoring. Ganote keyed an 8-0 run with his third 3-pointer of the night at the 9:33 mark to give the Bearcats a 61-52 lead.

Rockhurst jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the first half as Nick Volz scored eight points in the first six minutes. The Bearcats closed the first half on a 15-9 run to take a 41-38 halftime lead.

Rich Byhre led the Hawks with 17 points (on five-of-10 shooting) and six rebounds. Volz finished with 14 points on five-of-11 shooting. Maxim Romanov posted 12 points and eight rebounds. Jihad Thornton collected nine points and five assists.

"I was happy with how we defended for the most part," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "They're a great offensive rebounding team and that was an emphasis of ours to limit their second-chance points.

"We had some really strong defensive possessions that they just made one-on-one plays to get direct drives at the rim that we have to improve on. The guys were competing but we just got to get better."

The Bearcats (12-3, 6-2 GLVC) shot 54.7 percent from the field (29 of 53) and connected on 11-of-24 three-pointers (45.8 percent).
