Strong finish carries Miners over Rockhurst

Missouri S&T pulled away in the final nine minutes to score a 62-43 victory over Rockhurst on Saturday in Rolla, Missouri.

The Hawks went on a 12-0 run in the second half to cut the Miners' lead to three points, 44-41, with 9:03 left. Aidan Clarey capped the run with a pair of 3-point field goals. Rockhurst was held to one-of-11 shooting over final 7:20 as S&T ended the game on an 18-2 run.

Rockhurst finished with a 28.3 shooting percentage (15 of 53). The Hawks scored 20 points in the first half as the Miners took a 13-point lead aided by an 16-8 run.

"This was just a bad game," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "I sensed before the game that the guys were ready to play and had a good mentality. We shot so poorly and it may have affected our poise and focus. There was not a lot to celebrate in this game. It's hard to find a bright spot."

Nick Volz led the Hawks with 15 points (on six-of-10 shooting) before fouling out with 3:46 left. Maxim Romanov collected nine points and eight rebounds. Volz and Romanov combined for 15 of the Hawks' 20 first-half points.
