Miners snap losing skid against Hawks

Missouri S&T ended both halves with big runs on the way to an 82-62 victory over Rockhurst Sunday at Mason-Halpin Field House.

The road win for the Miners snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Hawks. S&T had gone nearly six years since its last win in Kansas City.

"We really had a tough time scoring," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We need to find ways to get our guys in position to make shots."

Rockhurst was held to 32.2 percent shooting from the field (19 of 59). The Hawks scored 23 points in the first half as the Miners took a 15-point lead aided by an 21-11 run. S&T ended the second half on a 27-15 run.

Nick Volz led the Hawks with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. The senior forward went over 1,000 career points in the first half and now has 1,009 career points.

Nick Arensberg scored a career-high 14 points. Mikal Gjerde collected 13 points and seven rebounds. Aidan Clarey tallied 10 points behind three 3-point field goals.

S&T (6-5, 2-2 GLVC) shot 50.0 percent from the field (32 of 66). Julien Smith led the Miners with 24 points and five assists.
