Rockhurst falls short against No. 22 Mustangs

Midwestern State held off a second-half comeback by Rockhurst to edge the Hawks, 2-1, Saturday in Claremore, Oklahoma.

The 22nd-ranked Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 25 minutes. Midwestern State scored its first goal on a penalty kick in the 12th minute after a yellow card was given to Rockhurst goalkeeper Fabio D'Errico. The Mustangs scored their second goal in the 25th minute.

Rockhurst got on the scoreboard in the 73rd minute as Tomasso Tirabassi found the nets for the Hawks' first goal of the season. Four minutes later, Tirabassi nearly tied the game. His shot to the bottom right of the goal was stopped by the Mustangs' keeper.

The Hawks finished with four shots on goal. Tirabassi led the Hawks with two shots. Jordan Andrews and Adam Burnett each had a shot on goal. D'Errico posted four saves.

The Hawks, 0-2, host Colorado-Colorado Springs in their home opener on Sept. 10.
