Defense will carry Hawks heading into new season

Senior goalkeeper Fabio D'Errico made 34 saves in 10 games last spring.
Tony Tocco heads into his 51st season as the Rockhurst head soccer coach hoping for improved play by the Hawks in the competitive Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Rockhurst officially opens its 58th season on Thursday in Claremore, Oklahoma against 12th-ranked Rogers State. The Hawks begin conference play at home vs. Drury on Sept. 17.

"Our defense is our strength. I think we are much improved midfield-wise and I think our offense still has yet to prove themselves. We have a lot of freshmen who will see playing time," Tocco said.

The top returners on defense are juniors Brenden Dolan and Nick Lumbard, in addition to sophomores Josh Lindell and Xavier Hadley. Freshmen defenders Mitchell Farrar and Ben Macinnes have looked impressive in preseason games.

Adam Burnett will key the midfield play for the Hawks. Added help in the midfield will come from Alessandro Macchioni, Parker Esparza, Chase Klusman, Blake Mann, Matthew Carey, Nick Grewe and freshman Jacopo Belardo.

"We could be a very good team if we have a great midfield. We need to do something with the ball," said Tocco, who has coached the Hawks to 713 wins over the past 50 years.

Tocco expects scoring to come from a group of five forwards led by senior Jordan Andrews, who has nine career goals. Jacob Weaver, Elluan Martins Gomes, Tomasso Tirabassi and Nate Temm give the Hawks' strong depth at the forward position.

"We need to do better building up on offense. We have good speed and guys who are capable of scoring goals," Tocco said.

Senior Fabio D'Errico leads a trio of experienced goalkeepers. D'Errico made 34 saves in 10 games last season. Peter Baker and Nick Randazzo have combined for 122 saves over the past three years.

The Hawks, who posted a 4-6-3 record last spring, finished 10th in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Tocco expects Indianapolis and Maryville to be the top two teams in the GLVC.
