Hawks fall short at UIS after five-run rally

Illinois Springfield scored two runs in the final two innings to edge Rockhurst 8-7 in the first game of a conference doubleheader Sunday in Springfield, Illinois.

The Hawks rallied from a 6-2 deficit to take a 7-6 lead in the eighth inning. Connor Ellefson and Ethan Kleinheider each drove in two runs with seventh-inning singles to tie the score. Ty Herrenbruck singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth.

Ellefson and Kleinheider led Rockhurst with two hits apiece. Tyler Stamer hit a two-run home run in the second inning.

Luke Lancaster (3-2) held the 12th-ranked Prairie Stars to two runs on two hits over the final 2.2 innings.

Springfield won the second game, 14-0. The Prairie Stars scored nine runs in the first two innings.

The Hawks (12-12, 9-11 GLVC) return home to host Missouri S&T on Friday.
