Offense shines as Hawks sweep pair from Miners

Cameron Gardner and Nic Mertes combined for 10 RBIs to lead Rockhurst to a 15-1 victory over Missouri S&T to complete a doubleheader sweep over the Miners Saturday at RU's Loyola Park.

Jack Eisenbarger held the Miners to one run on three hits over six innings to win his sixth game of the season in Game 2.

Gardner led the Hawks with three hits. The junior center fielder gave the Hawks a 6-1 lead with a grand slam in the fourth inning and added a two-run double in the fifth. Mertes posted two-run singles in the third and fifth.

Ty Herrenbruck finished with three hits and two RBIs. Garrett McNally, Tyler Stamer and Connor Ellefson each had two hits in the 16-hit attack.

In the first game, Rockhurst pounded out 11 hits in posting an 8-5 victory. The Hawks scored five runs in the first and two more in the second.

Nathan Mark paced the offense with two doubles and a single. Stamer and Herrenbruck both collected two hits and two RBIs. Gardner drove in two runs with a first-inning single.

CJ July (2-1) allowed four runs on five hits over the first 5.1 innings. Luke Lancaster held the Miners to one run on four hits over the final 3.2 innings to pick up his third save of the season.

Missouri S&T came back on Sunday to sweep the Hawks, 9-3 and 5-0. Tyler Stamer and Tommy Kraus each had two hits in the first game. Nic Mertes posted two hits in the second game.

The Hawks (14-12, 11-11 GLVC) next play at Quincy on April 23-24.
