Outside shooting carries Drury over Hawks

Drury connected on 14 three-pointers on the way to posting an 82-64 victory over Rockhurst Tuesday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Panthers closed the first half on a 38-11 run behind six 3-pointers to take a 48-31 halftime lead. The Hawks could not get closer than 12 points in the second half.

"We got beat pretty thoroughly tonight," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We came out to a strong start, but turnovers and missed shots led to a huge run (by Drury) to end the first half. I have to watch it again to see exactly how it turned so drastically.:"

In the first eight minutes, the Hawks hit eight of their first 12 shots to take a 20-10 lead. Rockhurst was held to 11 points in the final 12 minutes of the first half.

The Hawks went on a 14-5 run in the second half to cut Drury's lead to 12 points, 66-54, with 8:32 left. The Panthers answered the Rockhurst run with a 15-5 run over the next five minutes.

Curtis Lewis led the Hawks with 16 points on six-of-seven shooting. Nick Volz posted 10 points and four rebounds before leaving the game with an injury late in the first half.

Thomas Faber and Quinton Curry combined for 16 points and nine rebounds. Charlie Hoehne had a team-high six rebounds.

Malek Davis led Drury, 8-8, with 30 points and eight 3-pointers. The Panthers shot 53.6 percent from the field (30-of-56) and 48.3 percent behind the three-point line (14 of 29).

Rockhurst, 8-9, plays at Indianapolis Thursday night.
