Heflin powers No. 16 Hawks to season-opening win

Alec Heflin scored seven points on six goals and one assist to power 16th-ranked Rockhurst to a 16-8 season-opening victory over Davenport on a snow-covered field Sunday at RU's Bourke Field.

The Hawks rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the first period to take a 7-4 halftime lead. Heflin, a sophomore midfielder, tallied two goals and one assist in the first half.

Rockhurst iced the victory with seven goals in the fourth period. Heflin's fifth goal of the day gave the Hawks a 12-5 lead with 11:12 left in the game.

Brooks Hanson finished with three goals on five shots. Sam Lindahl and Jonny Licau both collected two assists.

Sal Valdivia and Nick Mostrom combined to win 22-of-28 faceoffs. Valdivia had a team-high nine ground balls, while Mostrom had seven grounds balls. Graden Soucy posted seven ground balls and six caused turnovers.

Rockhurst outshot the Panthers, 54-21. Heflin led the Hawks with 13 shots. Lindahl had seven shots and Jake Fisher added six shots. Boomer Kubik finished with seven saves for the Hawks.
