Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rockhurst falls short at third-ranked Truman

Third-ranked Truman State made four free throws in the final 11 seconds to hold on for an 81-76 victory over Rockhurst Thursday night in Kirksville, Missouri.

The loss drops the Hawks to 9-12 with one game left in the regular season (Saturday at William Jewell). Rockhurst is in ninth place in the GLVC Points Rating System and needs to finish in the top eight to earn a spot in the GLVC Tournament.

"This is a tough loss at this point in the season," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Our guys battled hard. Truman was just better tonight. At this point we need to go win at Jewell to have any chance of moving on."

Down 10 with three minutes left, Rockhurst went on a 13-4 run to cut Truman's lead to 77-76 with 11 seconds. Chris Hamil capped the late run with his fourth 3-pointer.

Hamil led the Hawks with 21 points. Nick Volz scored 17 points on seven-of-10 shooting.

Quinton Curry posted 13 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Curtis Lewis tallied 13 points behind three 3-pointers. Lasse Gummerus added eight points.

Rockhurst took a 25-24 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs used a 15-5 run in the second half to take a 65-54 lead with 5:45 left.

Masen Miller led Truman, 17-1, with 23 points off the bench.
