Late free throws lift Jewell over Hawks, 63-62

The Rockhurst Hawks' season ended Saturday at William Jewell, falling to the Cardinals 63-62 in Liberty, Missouri.

Rockhurst finished the season with a 9-13 record, falling one spot short of playing in the upcoming GLVC Tournament.

"Extremely difficult ending to a very frustrating season," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We never clicked as a team this year, which wasn't anticipated due to our experience. Today, we didn't make enough shots late to stop their momentum."

The Hawks jumped out to a 37-24 halftime lead and took a 44-24 lead with 17:06 left. Jewell went on a 20-4 run over the next seven minutes to cut the Hawks' lead to 48-44.

Jewell took their first lead of the second half at the 2:20 mark on a 3-pointer by Carter Olsen. Down one in the closing seconds, the Cardinals' Jermain Jordan hit a pair of free throws with four seconds left. A driving layup by RU's Curtis Lewis was blocked by Eysan Wiley at the buzzer.

Nick Volz led the Hawks with 13 points on five-of-10 shooting. Chris Hamil collected 12 points and eight rebounds. Lewis finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

Quinton Curry, Lasse Gummerus and Jake Buchanan combined for 20 point and 13 rebounds.

Wiley led Jewell, 5-16, with 18 points.
