Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Outside shooting carries Northern State over Hawks

Strong outside shooting led 15th-ranked Northern State to a 77-59 victory over Rockhurst on the second day of the Small College National Basketball Hall of Fame Classic Sunday at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The Wolves scored 39 points from long range, connecting on 13-of-32 three-point field goals. Senior forward Jordan Belka canned six threes to finish with a game-high 24 points.

"We are playing against some of the elite teams in the country right now so there's not a lot of room for error," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Northern State was able to get us into rotation and create open three-point shots for them, and they are an excellent three-point shooting team."

Nick Volz scored 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting to lead the Hawks. Rich Byhre posted 11 points. Charlie Hoehne came off the bench to score nine points and block three shots. Jake Auer added eight points.

The Hawks ended the first half on a strong finish to cut Northern's lead to 40-37. Rockhurst shot 65.2 percent from the field (15-of-23) in the first half. Volz scored 16 points in the first 20 minutes.

Northern State opened the second half on a 15-4 run to take a 55-41 lead with 14:09 left in the game. The Hawks never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

"There are definitely some bright spots in the game today," Diener said. "We have some guys that didn't get a lot of minutes last year that are showing some flashes of consistency, which is good to see."
