Men drop opener in Small College Hall of Fame Classic

The Rockhurst men opened the regular season with a 78-56 loss to eighth-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas in the Small College National Basketball Hall of Fame Classic Saturday at the Civic Areana in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Aquinas jumped out to a 21-10 lead midway through the first half. The Hawks ended the first half on an 8-2 run to pull within 12 points of the Spartans, 37-25, at halftime.

Rockhurst went on a 16-4 run in the second half to cut the Spartans' lead to 12 points, 62-50, with four minutes left. Jake Auer and Nick Volz combined for 13 points in the run.

Rich Byhre led the Hawks with 12 points on four-of-eight shooting. Volz posted 10 points and six rebounds. Auer tallied 10 points and five rebounds. Charlie Hoehne came off the bench to score eight points on four-of-five shooting.
