Hot shooting carries Hornets past Hawks

Four players combined for 76 points to carry Emporia State to a 96-78 victory over Rockhurst Wednesday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Tray Buchanan and Kaden Evans combined for 47 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds to pace the Hornets (2-1).

Emporia State jumped out to a 51-40 halftime lead on 60 percent shooting. The Hornets went on a 21-5 run to pull away down the stretch in the second half.

"We had big trouble containing the ball tonight. It has been an issue for us," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Our offense was fine, we couldn't get stops. The ball was living in the paint."

The Hornets outscored the Hawks 38-22 in the paint. ESU also won the battle of the boards by a 33-24 margin.

Jake Auer led Rockhurst with a career-high 23 points. The sophomore guard connected on seven-of-11 three-point shots.

Rich Byhre scored 18 points on six-of-10 shooting. Nick Volz posted 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Nick Arensberg tallied a career-high 10 points.
