Volz leads Hawks to 63-56 victory

Nick Volz posted 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead Rockhurst to a 63-56 victory over Purdue Northwest in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge Saturday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Volz connected on nine-of-15 shots from the field. The senior forward made two layups to key an 11-0 run in the second half, giving the Hawks a 49-43 lead with 7:51 left in the game.

Jake Auer finished with 15 points with three 3-pointers. Mikal Gjerde collected six points, six rebounds and two steals. Rich Byhre, Jake Buchanan and Aidan Clarey added six points apiece.

"I am proud of our resiliency," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We have some high character guys who are growing together. Every guy contributed today.

"It is crucial for every guy to stay ready. We have a lot of guys who have showed strong practices and need game experience. We will get better each time out."

Spencer Moes and Auer each made two free throws in the final minute to secure the Hawks' first win of the season.

Rockhurst ended up shooting 37.5 percent from the field (24 of 64) and 70 percent from the foul line (seven of 10).
