Strong bench leads Hawks to 74-53 win over Miners

Five bench players combined for 44 points to ignite Rockhurst to a 74-53 victory over Missouri S&T Wednesday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Reserve forward Rich Byhre paced the Rockhurst attack with 16 points. Byhre scored all of his points in the first half, hitting all six of his shots including four 3-point field goals.

The Hawks, 4-4, jumped out to a 26-14 lead at the 8:29 mark in the first half. Byhre and Lasse Gummerus combined for four 3-pointers to key a 12-2 run.

Gummerus scored nine of his 11 points in the first half in helping the Hawks take a 38-24 halftime lead. Gummerus also finished with seven rebounds.

Freshman Jake Auer posted 10 points on four-of-nine shooting. Curtis Lewis collected eight points and four assists. Nick Volz added six points, eight rebounds and three steals.

The Hawks also received strong bench play from Thomas Faber, Spencer Moes and Jake Buchanan. The trio combined for 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

"We had great contributions off the bench today," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "I thought we guarded very well tonight for the entirety of the game.

"They had a lot more success against us earlier this season down in Rolla. It was nice to see so many guys get quality minutes. They have been competing hard in practice."

The Hawks shot 41.8 percent from the field (28 of 67). The Hawks made 14-of-31 shots behind the arc (45.2 percent).

Kaden Froebe led Missouri S&T, 2-7, with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Miners shot 27.9 percent from the field (17 of 61) and 70.0 at the foul line (14 of 20).

The Hawks host Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m. on Jan. 14.
