First-half run carries SBU past Hawks

Southwest Baptist jumped out to a 16-point lead in the first half and held off Rockhurst in the second half to post a 72-59 victory over the Hawks Thursday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Bearcats, 7-2, went on a 20-5 run to take a 33-17 lead with 2:17 left in the first half. Rockhurst opened the second half on a 12-7 run to cut the Bearcats' lead to 42-37 with 14:05 remaining.

SBU's Tyler Williams canned a three-pointer to start a 19-9 run as the Bearcats took a 61-46 lead with 5:30 left. The Hawks never cut their deficit to less than 10 in the final five minutes.
 
Aidan Clarey led the Hawks, 4-5, with 17 points in 17 minutes off the bench. The freshman guard connected on six-of-eight shots, including five-of-seven 3-point shooting.

Nick Volz finished with 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals. Curtis Lewis supplied 10 points. Charlton Offermans added eight points and two steals.

The Hawks shot 34.5 percent from the field (19 of 55). The Hawks made eight-of-28 shots behind the arc (28.6 percent).

Brady Smith led SBU with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Bearcats shot 51.0 percent from the field (26 of 51) and 40.0 percent behind the 3-point line (eight of 20).

Rockhurst travels to Drury on Saturday afternoon.
